AGROMIS

Sri Lanka is an agriculture-based country. Often in newspapers one can read that many farmers complain about getting low prices for their produce. They also complain that such situation repeats every year and turns them into as permanent debtors. At the same time we can observe that prices of produce float at a very low level in one part of the country, while they are at a very higher level in another part of the country. One reason for this low pricing is due to the surplus of supply to the markets in a single day or in a week. When demand goes high many farmers cultivate the same and this results in the surplus of supplies. Therefore we need to inform them on the selection of the crops to cultivate and of the current market trends on pricing of produce and the demand of produce in different markets for fair pricing and the betterment of their living.

Proposed Solution

In this project we plan to develop a small hand held mobile device and a server based solution to overcome the hardships faced by the farmers.

The Mobile application facilitates farmers to record and retrieve relevant information from the server such as market price of produce, details of excess produce supplied to major markets in the country, produce that have high demand and from which market, details of produce that are ready to be harvested from various parts of the country etc., therefore enabling them to know the current trend in the supply of different produce to the markets, and the marketability of various produce to the markets.

The server application collects price variation of different produce at different markets, current rate of supply of produce to different markets, produce being cultivated by farmers etc., stores these information and presents them to farmers in a more understandable way, such that it is most useful for farmers in deciding in harvesting produce and sending them to the most appropriate market.

The web based information system is an extended version of the current trends of supplies to the markets, which could be easily used by the media in reporting price in their mass communication media. The same web based application could also be used to convey much detailed information on the selection best seeds for cultivation, usage of pesticides and fertilizers etc., that could benefit the farmers both from the viewpoint of monetary restrictions and the public health.
